Na het succes van The Sixth Sense maakte schrijver-regisseur M. Night Shyamalan de plottwist tot zijn handelsmerk. Het verhulde zijn talent voor mild drama tussen personages en bijzonder camerawerk. Bovendien werden de onthullingen steeds zwakker en raakte het publiek afgeleid door alleen nog maar daarop te focussen. Maar wat is ergerlijker: weer een twist of juist een einde dat helemaal geen antwoord geeft zoals in Knock at the Cabin?
Eric en Andrew zijn even op vakantie met hun dochtertje Wen als vier mensen opduiken. Met merkbare tegenzin houden ze hen gevangen en stellen hen voor een dilemma: een van de gezinsleden moet zich opofferen en zich door de andere twee laten vermoorden of de wereld vergaat. Tenminste, dat is wat de vreemde indringers beweren.
Dit is een verfilming van het boek The Cabin at the End of the World van Paul Tremblay uit 2019. Hoewel er toen natuurlijk al genoeg mensen waren die in complotten geloofden en elkaar naar de mond spraken met hun waanideeën, zijn de wappies wel een kind van deze tijd. Het is precies het type volk dat aanklopt bij het hom*ostel en hun geadopteerde kind. Andrew is er bekend mee, dus hij gaat ervan uit dat dit gewoon vier verwarden zijn.
Het is lastig om een boodschap te halen uit de film. Sowieso wijkt het plot af van het boek, dus mocht je dat gelezen hebben, dan zijn er nog genoeg verrassingen. De vier indringers geven aan dat ze niet wisten wie ze aan zouden treffen in dit huisje, dus het feit dat het overrompelde stel hom*o is doet er niet toe. "Waarom wij? Wat maakt ons zo speciaal?", vraagt Andrew.
Gaat de film daar over? Dat van partners die afwijken van de norm gevraagd wordt om iets op te offeren om de vrede te bewaren? Doen ze dat niet, dan zijn ze egoïstisch? Is dat de boodschap dat van bepaalde stelletjes verwacht wordt dat ze iets moeten inleveren als ze per se bij elkaar willen zijn?
In zekere zin zou het mooi zijn om die bekrompen intolerantie aan de kaak stellen, want er zijn nog steeds mensen die zeggen dat stelletjes best hom*oseksueel mogen zijn zolang ze hun intimiteit maar niet in het openbaar laten zien. Of dat interraciale stelletjes maar beter geen kinderen kunnen krijgen, want dan wordt de zuiverheid van 'het ras' bezoedeld. Helaas blijft het gissen of de schrijvers van boek en scenario zo'n boodschap in hun spannende verhaal hebben verwerkt.
De iconische Shyamalan-twist blijft deze keer achterwege. Het zijn geen buitenaardse wezens die een experiment uitvoeren, de bewoners van het vakantiehuisje zijn niet vóór de aanvang van de film overleden. Je zit echter wel de hele tijd met dezelfde vragen als Andrew: is dit echt of heeft iemand deze mensen gemanipuleerd? Waarom gebeurt dit en waarom per se dit gezin? Op die eerste vraag krijg je antwoord, op die tweede niet.
Dat zorgt voor een onvoldaan gevoel na afloop. Wat was de reden voor dit alles en wat is het gevolg? Hoe gaat het verder met de personages? Ambiguïteit is geen prettige emotie om een bioscoopzaal mee te verlaten. En het is nou eenmaal een cinematografische wet dat een slap einde een film kan verpesten.
Helemaal verpesten? Dat ook weer niet. De spanning gaat vrijwel direct van start en houdt de hele tijd stand. Dave Bautista's personage is weliswaar een schoolleraar, maar zo'n getatoeëerde boom van een vent kan onmogelijk niet intimiderend zijn. De andere drie 'profeten' zijn minder eng, maar ze hebben allemaal verontrustende zelfgemaakte wapens bij zich. Het acteerwerk, de dialogen en het camerawerk is allemaal Shyamalan op zijn best.
Opvallend is de keuze voor een Universal-logo uit de jaren tachtig, een lettertype uit datzelfde decennium en Jarin Blaschkes gebruik van cameralenzen uit de jaren negentig (waar je niks van merkt). Geen idee waarom, want het verhaal speelt zich af in de huidige tijd en het voelt ook niet als een typische film van vroeger. Het is ook niet te plaatsen binnen de thema's. De film is prima tot ongeveer tien minuten voor het einde; daarmee is dit niet de beste van Shyamalan, maar ook lang niet zijn slechtste.
